What is an SSL certificate?
An SSL Certificate (Secure Socket Layer) is a secure computer communication protocol via data encryption that is used mainly to secure exchanges between a computer's browser and a website and, when properly activated, displays reassuring information in the address bar of web browsers, such as the padlock and the https notation. There are three main types of audits with different levels of verification. Domain Validation (DV), Organization Validation (OV) and Extended Validation (EV) certificates.
A DV SSL certificate is quick to set up and displays a green padlock, this is done by simply checking the owner of the domain name, checks often done by email. It is suitable for a personal page or blog. (Free versions also exist)
An OV SSL certificate assures site visitors, via the green padlock and additional information, that the site owner has been checked and the official existence of his company recognized. This is the minimum level for a merchant site for example, although unfortunately it is visually difficult for visitors to distinguish from DV SSL Certificates.
An EV SSL certificate is the most complicated to obtain but also the most effective to reassure potential customers, since your company will be scanned and you will have to provide proof of your existence, operability and other via the transmission of official documents, having the impact of displaying the lock, very complete information about your company in a reassuring green color, as well as (and this is the important point) the official name of your company in your visitors' browser address bar. It is THE SSL certificate par excellence but also the most expensive.
If you have subdomains to secure as well (e. g. www.mywebsite.ch - support.mywebsite.ch), a wildcard version of SSL certificate will be required. Finally, Multi-domain versions also exist if you want to use a single certificate for several websites.
